Introduction

The following pages contain my notes from studying Michael Jang's RHCSA/RHCE Red Hat Linux Certification Study Guide. Jang's book is incredibly helpful, explaining each objective in great detail. My notes are quite simple in comparison, thus they are merely a supplement to the book. I highly recommend purchasing and studying the book if you plan on taking the exams.

Read This Before Continuing!

Before we can begin with the lessons, we must first set up a lab where we will be doing all of our studying. A note before we continue: The study lab uses KVM (virtual machines), therefore you will need a CPU that supports hardware virtualization. You can find out if your CPU supports hardware virtualization by checking the manufacturer website for your CPU. For example, if we check the product details for AMD's Phenom N930, we will see that there is a "Yes" listed next to "AMD's Virtualization Technology," which means that the CPU supports hardware virtualization. If we check the product details for Intel's i7-2600, we see that there is a "Yes" listed for Intel's Virtualization Technology (VT-x), which means that the CPU supports hardware virtualization. If you're already in Linux, you can check by typing  grep svm /proc/cpuinfo for AMD CPUs, or grep vmx /proc/cpuinfo for Intel CPUs. If the grep statement returns nothing, this means your CPU does not support hardware virtualization and you cannot continue with this lab.
